Good News

As Dean Worrell mentioned in his first post, one of the purposes of this blog is to share good news about all of the great things happening here at the Walton College. We have several good pieces to report this week, and it's only Wednesday!

The Walton College Accounting Department has been ranked 19th (in a tie) among public universities according to Business Week. Our ranking among both public and private universities is 35th. A news release detailing this honor will be published next week.

At the Arkansas Donald W. Reynolds Governor's Cup business plan competition this week, Walton College teams brought home five awards:

  • Tears for Life won first place in the graduate competition.
  • Elevate Medical won third place in the undergraduate competition.
  • Tears for Life won the graduate Innovation Award.
  • Elevate Medical won the undergraduate Innovation Award.
  • Ground Up Biosolutions won the Agriculture Award.

And, finally, the Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Public Relations Society of America recently awarded two "Apex" Awards to the Walton College. The first award went to Kathy Deck, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, for being the "Communicator of the Year." The second award - for Special Events and Observances - was given to the Office of External Relations in recognition of "Decade of Dreams," the tenth anniversary celebration of the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame.

Greetings from the Walton College Alumni Society!

Walton College Alumni Society President, Chuck Dudley, and his son, Robert, on the University of Arkansas campus.

Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2009! You are entering the work world at an extremely interesting time in our history, with financial challenges not seen in my lifetime. I hope you have learned your lessons well and can help the next generation of business graduates avoid mistakes made over the last decade.

Your education at the Sam M. Walton College of Business will serve you well in the endeavor you choose, and probably will lead you to things you never imagined. That has been my experience. And, just because you have your degree, never stop learning and never stop seeking education.

Upon your graduation, you will become a member of the Arkansas Alumni Association and the Walton College Alumni Society. Our WCAS Mission is to communicate with our graduates, involve our graduates and students, and recruit students to the University and graduates to the Alumni Association. I believe you will enjoy the different types of networking we offer, including local Alumni chapters, social events, and the most popular forms of social networking. I’m still new to Facebook and blogging, but I have found it a fascinating way to stay in touch with alumni and with what’s happening at the College and on The Hill.

If you are an older graduate, we encourage you to continue your membership in the Arkansas Alumni Association. You are automatically a WCAS member, as well.

If you’re not an Alumni member, please join! There are many great benefit s to being a WCAS member. And, with the Drive for 35 (35,000 alumni members) currently underway, it would be an opportune time to join. We have one of the top Alumni Associations in the SEC, and we want to be #1 in membership.

The WCAS is building traditions. We recommend the Commencement speaker to the Dean, participate in the Walton College Awards Banquet, create opportunities to network, and have developed a WCAS Need-Based Scholarship. More great things are on the horizon.

Congrats again to the Class of 2009, and welcome to the WCAS. Find your place with the opportunities to connect and enjoy reconnecting with friends and alums.

Where's Walton? In Bartlesville and Tulsa!

Over the last two days, Rachel Burton (our alumni relations manager) and I traveled to Bartlesville and Tulsa, Oklahoma, to connect with some of our alumni. Visiting with our alumni is one of the most rewarding parts of our jobs because they all have such unique stories to tell.

We started our trip by having lunch in Bartlesville with Ashley Jones (BSBA '05), who is one of our Business Alumni Advisory Council members. Here is a shot of beautiful downtown Bartlesville and the ConocoPhillips campus (where Ashley works).

Next, we had an appointment with Mike Quinn (BSBA '86), who is the owner of Quinn Chrylser Dodge. If you are in the Bartlesville area and are looking for a new vehicle, be sure to check with this alumnus! It's nice to support fellow graduates.

Before leaving Bartlesville for the day, we had a meeting with Marty Schoenthaler (MBA '83). Marty also works for ConocoPhillips and let us know that there are many Walton College alumni who are employed by the company. We may have to have a get-together there in the future!

On Thursday, Rachel and I spent the day in Tulsa visiting with a few more alumni. First, we met with Mike Turner (BSBA '94), who works for MainSpring Retail Solutions. Then, we had lunch with Brett Bingham (BSBA '88) from Enterprise, who is very active in the Tulsa Razorback Club.

Next, we visited with Dorothy Carson (BSBA '85), who works for Kallenberger & Associates. We were supposed to meet with one more alumnus that afternoon, but he had to cancel our appointment. We look forward to checking in with you next time, Scott!

Did you recognize any names from this post? We hope so! One of the purposes of these posts is to help our alumni become more connected with each other and hear updates about where your classmates are located.

Thanks for reading! And special thanks to all of our alumni who agreed to meet with us on this trip.

The Final Countdown: A Senior's View

Do you remember the last few weeks of college right before your graduation? You might not, as many students are overwhelmed with finals, papers, and the inevitable job hunt. To give you a glimpse into one graduating senior's last few weeks of school, we've asked Walton College student, Samantha Sturm, to write a post for us:

How many days of school are left?.....
Graduation Countdown: 18 Days

Wow! I can’t believe that my undergraduate career is coming to an end. It really does feel like I just moved here to Northwest Arkansas into my tiny dorm room, only knowing a handful of people. Now, four years later, I have my own apartment and I’m leaving more friends than I could ever imagine. I was actually sitting in class today thinking about how I will probably never see three-fourths of these people that I’ve had class with these past four years. The other one-fourth of my classmates, I’m hoping, will stay great friends and professional contacts for years to come. I can’t wait for the day that I will come back as an alumna and watch the Razorbacks play at the Reynolds Stadium, while my own kids are filling the familiar student section by the band.

But until then….

I’ve been forced to face the inevitable. I will have to dress up for work everyday (including doing my hair, make-up, etc). I’m still holding out for the day when sweatpants and t-shirts become acceptable professional clothing. The ability to have 1 to 3 hour breaks in between classes is something that doesn’t exist in the ‘working world’. Well, there goes my naptime. I do realize that finding and keeping a job in this current economy is going to be tough, and while I feel frustrated more times than not, I know that the degree and knowledge that I have earned from the Walton College will allow me to be successful in any and all of my personal and professional endeavors.

On the other hand….

I will no longer have to worry about tests, ‘busy work’, and lectures and THAT will be a nice change. I will finally receive monetary compensation for the work that I do that is relevant to my degree. I can’t wait for that day. I will be celebrating! Now if only I could find a job in this tough economy…..

Where's Walton?

We’re everywhere! Our alumni and friends span the globe, and as Dean Worrell mentioned in his first post, we are trying to connect this vast group through social media. The Walton College currently has a fan page and several groups on Facebook, an alumni group on LinkedIn, and a page on Twitter. We hope that by providing these multiple outlets for networking, you will become more involved and stay connected with us.

In addition to connecting in a virtual manner, the Walton College also utilizes its External Relations team to meet one-on-one with alumni and friends. I am the associate director of development for the Walton College and a member of this team. One of my responsibilities is to travel and meet with our alumni in an attempt to reconnect them with the College and hear about their endeavors since graduation. And, since I work in development, I’ll admit that I won’t turn down a check from you either! :-) In all honesty, though, meeting our alumni and hearing their stories is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. I love to help you become involved with our students, engaged with our faculty, and educated about all of the wonderful things we offer.

In the future, those of us who travel plan to use this blog as a forum to share where we are going and who we are meeting. So, stay tuned to find out “Where’s Walton?!”

The Business of Blogging

Greetings! I am honored to be the first person to post on the newly established Sam M. Walton College of Business Blog. We hope to use this as a forum to share good news and allow you, our alumni and friends, the opportunity to stay connected with us and with each other. This blog is just one of many social networking avenues the Walton College is utilizing to enhance our alumni network. As you may know, we currently have a presence on Facebook and LinkedIn and hope that this blog will compliment the content on those sites. We plan to provide opportunities for you to share your stories with us, as we share our stories with you.

Do you have good news you’d like to share? Have you started a new business or just embarked on an exciting new career? If so, leave us a comment and tell us about it! You can also submit information to the Class Notes section of the Arkansas Alumni Association to share with your alma mater and fellow alumni.

I look forward to starting this dialogue with you via this blog and focusing on the positive things that have made the Walton College the outstanding business school it is today.
